HOME PAGE OF THELONG BEACH INVITATIONAL REGATTA. The events are based on those of other Sea Scout competitions and from requirements and basic knowledge learned through ordinary. But then, some is just off the wall. . For example, does your crew know how to drill? What if they can’t see where they are going? For that matter, how about team pulling blindfolded? What would happen to your Scuttlebutt time if you had to fill the barrel first? Will your general knowledge of seamanship, and scouting survive a game of Jeopardy? . Of course, we cannot guarantee that these events will be a part of the regatta in any given year. We strive to find new and exciting events to make this a different regatta each time you come. . The Long Beach Invitational Regatta is held each year on the second Saturday in March at the Long Beach Sea Scout Base, 5875 E. Appian Way, Long Beach, California. |

1912-2012 On Saturday, March 10, 2012, 87 youth along with 42 adults from 12 ships converged on the Long Beach Sea Scout Base for the 29th Annual Long Beach Invitational Regatta. After the events, the fellowship and the food, all reported having a great time. This year's events included exercises in knot tying, heaving line, canoeing, seamanship knowledge, walking, gum chewing (not at the same time) and song writing. In a few of the events, crews had to tie some simple knots (in a dark room), identify parts of a sailboat, question answers on general topics, Walk in unison (not drill) and write their own sea shanty. For a complete list of this year’s events And
the winner is… Congratulations to the crew of the Del Mar from Newport Beach. They finished in first place with 157 points, Islander, from West L.A., was second with 125 points and the Conquest, from Long Beach, finished third with 122 points. Hell
Drill! (And other
things) After the events closed, there were a few extra activities. The crews each performed their Sea Shanties. The best Shanty was performed by the Triton, from Newport Beach and the Del Mar from Newport Beach won a “Walk the Plank” runoff. Afterwards, all hands participated in a “Hell Drill” competition. Here the judges remove people from the competition for making mistakes until only one person remains. That person this year was Sammy Benesh, of the Morning Star from Sherman Oaks. Congratulations Sammy for a job well done! Food!
Special thanks to officers from the Islander as well as all of the other adults who helped prepare lunch. How difficult is it to concentrate on competition in the morning when all you can smell is Barbecue? The food was great and plentiful. Some may argue but I think lunch is everyone’s favorite part of the Regatta. Help!
